My Full Body and Mind Make Over - Month 6

Early September and Late October
December marks 6 months that I have been working out.  December 17th to be exact.  During the past few months I have really upped my workout.  I now do 30 minutes of cardio on the arc trainer, I'm up to 1.3 miles with a high resistance, and 90 minutes of strength training.  Two days a weeks I work out alone, 3 days a week I work out with my trainer, Jesse, and Saturdays I go to boot camp.  I have also started to use a "pre work-out" drink and I have seen an increase in the intensity of my workouts.



What I have achieved...
Pounds:
I have lost 24 pounds!!!  Not too shabby.  Especially if you saw all the muscle I have gained.  True story, I'm buff!  I'm not joking, like..., people are impressed.  Most of all me!  At first I was like, oh my gosh!  What's this hard thing here?!  It's cancer!  Oh, wait, it's a muscle.  There's a muscle there??!!

Inches:
Sadly, Jesse and I didn't do my measurements until about month 4.  But just from month 4 to month 6 I lost 5.5 inches off of my body!!  I had her double check.  That is so incredible to me.

Weights:
I can leg press 385 pounds.  Legit.  I did 107 leg presses of 90 pounds (plus the weight of the sled) without stopping to win a sweatshirt.  You know I'll do ANYTHING for a deal.  ;-)  I do walking lunges now with 20 pound weights in each hand, 6 months ago I could hardly get through three "hallways" of lunges without weights.  Oh, did I mention, Jesse has found a hallway that's three times as long as the first?  I can bicep curl 25 pounds, that doesn't sound like a lot but you try doing that for a minute or "until failure" as Jesse loves to say.  I do straight leg dead lifts with 50 pounds, I think I started with 10 pounds and could hardly do 5 reps the first time I tried.

Clothes:

I bought my first pair of jeans, or pants in general, in over 11 years!!!  And I think I look pretty good in them.  ;-)  I've gone through my closet and sold ALL of my large clothes.  I'm down 4 sizes!

My Son:
Gabriel has lost a lot of weight!!  I don't know how much because we don't weigh him, but I can see a major difference.  He has also become more active with me.  We'll go across the street and chase each other around the school's field kicking a soccer ball.  My son is the second reason I wanted to get into better shape.  I'm doing it for me, has to be for me, but I also want to be an example to my son.

Ignorance is Bliss:
I can't tell you how true this is.  I absolutely look at food totally differently than I used to.  I know exactly how much effort it will take for me to burn that bag of Doritos.  No thanks!  I used to look forward to food, to eating.  SO MUCH of our lives are centered around food, you should look forward to it, right? Wrong.  Not me at least.  Or, you shouldn't get happy at the thought of eating ice cream or fast food.  That was me.  Now I know food is fuel.  That's it.  I need to fuel my body so that it is strong enough to get me through my 2 hour workouts.  I need food to supply my body with vitamins, protein and nutrients.  I cannot waste my calories on disgusting, processed foods.  But it goes even farther than that.  Did you know that 6 Triscuit crackers = 120 calories?  If I'm trying to stay between 1200 - 1500 calories max, which I am, I can't even eat Triscuits!  1200 calories gives me 3, 300 calorie meals and 3, 100 calorie snacks.  Let me tell you, it doesn't always seem like enough.  lol.  I now look forward to food in a different way.  I get excited at making a healthy meal.  I get excited when I make a dinner I can't finish, yet was delicious and filling.  I get excited when I go out to eat and figure out something healthy I can order.  I get excited over AVOCADOS.  Nothing new there.

Major difference!!!  And here is a photo I'm not too thrilled to post.  I don't really look great in any of these next photos as they were taken after I worked out, but people are encouraging me to post it so... here you go.


That last photo was taken a few weeks ago.  I've lost 4 pounds since then!!  I am really proud of myself!  You might not be able to tell, but in that first picture, my smile is strained, embarrassed of how heavy and weak I had let myself become.  Might I even say, that smile is hiding shame.  Now look at the last photo.  That smile is a genuinely proud, happy smile.  I am happy!  I am strong!

Sorry to be cliche, but NOTHING TASTES AS GOOD AS FIT FEELS! I hope I am encouraging someone out there to get their ass in the gym.  Stop making excuses.  Just, stop.  You sound so stupid and everyone sees right through them.  Jesse and Cindy have both told me that before I started working out I told them that I "was happy being big."  What the hell kind of total bullshit is that??!!  I cry every time I think about that.  I had convinced myself that I was okay and I had the nerve to tell people that I was happy.  No one is happy being "morbidly obese."  (Yes, at my heaviest, this was my medical classification.)  No one is happy only being able to shop in a "special section" of a store.  No one is happy getting winded walking up a flight of stairs.  No one is happy being the "fat friend."  I will not lie to you.  NOTHING about this is easy.  NOTHING.  NOTHING!  Yes, you have to dedicate time to get into the gym or workout at home.  How much TV do you watch in a day?  Uh huh, you have time to go to the gym.  It will hurt.  It will hurt a lot.  You won't want to go on Mondays.  It will take awhile for your taste buds to change.  I ate some of my FAVORITE potato chips the other day, and I found them bland, greasy and gross.  Sometimes you will be so hungry and yet so sore that you literally won't be able to fix yourself some scrambled eggs.  But guess what else?  You'll feel better, you'll look better.  You'll fit into that sexy outfit with the tags still on it in the back of your closet.  People will tell you everywhere you go how great you look, and they really mean it!  You know I love it!!!  You'll get to buy all new clothes! Oh, and you'll live longer, blah, blah, blah...  ;-)  If I can do it, you can do it!

My Next Six Month Goals:
June, 2015 will be one year in my fitness journey.  I hope to be down 50 pounds total by then.  I think I can do it.  I've lost 24 lbs in the first six months, I hope to match it in the next.  I would like to hike Bishop's Peak in SLO and I would also like to run a 5k with Gabriel.  There is one next September at Disneyland that I'm thinking about signing us up for.

My Full Body and Mind Make Over, Month 3

Month 3
Week 9 - August 18, 2014
I finished week 8 with a boot camp with my trainer and 5 other victims.  It.  Was.  Horrible.  I got through the workout, although it was the hardest of my life.  The next day however, I was dead.  My legs weren't okay for 3 days!  Sunday I had a moment of weakness and had two tacos and some nachos from Taco Bell.  It wasn't worth it.  Craziest part, I started sweating and shaking immediately after I was finished.  I didn't feel well for the rest of the day.  Not to mention the self loathing.  I did two extremely hard workouts with my new workout buddy Monday and Tuesday.  Probably overdid it.  Not to mention I ended the week with another boot camp.

Week 10
Nothing too exciting to add this week.  I made it to boot camp once again and even took Gabriel.  He asked to come!  He only worked out for about 20 minutes, but hey, he sees me working out which has to be good, right? I'm not enjoying eating out at restaurants.  I seem to order salad everywhere I go.  It's safe.  And boring.  I did cheat and weighed myself before I was supposed to and I'm down another 4 pounds!!!!  I am beyond stoked!! 

Week 11
This week started out hard.  It was Labor Day.  I drank a few calories, let's just say that.  Then we were off to Disneyland for three days.  (blog to follow)  Hello?! Junk food everywhere along with overpriced fruit.  I investigated and our hotel did have a fitness center.  Great, I thought, I can workout at least.  Uh, it closed at 8:00 when of course we were still in the park.  So I got my cardio in, I walked 15,000 steps in three days.  Which really isn't that much, you're supposed to walk 10,000 a day.  I wonder if my step counter is working.  I noticed a HUGE difference in how I felt after three days at Disneyland.  I usually can hardly walk and am so sore for days.  I remember hobbling to a rest stop bathroom on our way home last time, this trip I unloaded the entire car and felt great!  I worked out today, after 4 days off.  My usual Sunday off and then the 3 days we were at Disneyland.  I was sure I wasn't going to be able to handle my workout today AND I was SURE I had gained weight at the happiest place on earth.  Well, my workout was hard, but I got through it.  Jesse even added weights to my walking lunges.  I graduated!!  I couldn't help myself, I had to weigh myself and see if I had gained weight after Disneyland.  Guess what, I'm down another pound!!!  What?!  I can't believe it!  I still have another week to go this month.  So far 5 pounds lost in the past three weeks, that's the best I've done.

Week 12
I finished off this month working hard and feeling great!  I didn't lose weight this week, but I'm down 5 lbs for the month and that's awesome!

Lessons Learned:
Uh, to do all of the lessons I've already learned.  I got this!

My Full Body and Mind Make Over, Month 2

Week 5
I could hardly get through my workout on Sunday and by that evening I was sick with a cold.  I was devastated thinking about the set back that this might give me.  I managed to only take off Monday and Tuesday still making it to the gym 5 days this week.  Wednesday was horrible, but I'm convinced it helped me get over my cold.  I even made it to the Journey concert at the Mid State Fair and wore a shirt that hasn't fit me in months! (non scale victory) I did great and didn't eat any fair food.

Week 6
I am a little discouraged.  My work out buddy hasn't been able to make it for awhile and working out 2-3 days a week alone sucks.  I feel weak and fat, ugh, but I still make it 5 days to the gym.

My trainer, Jesse, put together a meal plan for me and I also found the app "My Fitness Pal" where you can log all of the food you eat.  Both have helped me watch my caloric intake.  I don't even want to know what it was before, but I know I've cut it by 1/2 if not 2/3.  Seriously.  I did have a slip up.  I had a meeting at a restaurant, and this is a fact for me, I do a lot of business over drinks and food, I have to watch it.  I shared a deep fried onion blossom dipped in ranch dressing.  Note the word, shared.  Well it was enough to make me violently ill that night.  I thought I had food poisoning, but after checking with the people I was with, I found it was just me.  My body didn't want that and it let me know!  Lesson learned.

Week 7
I feel new energy and I see major changes in my legs and arms!  Food has been a little hard.  I have been thinking about Taco Bell and my favorite chips and dip for days, even after what happened last week.  Jesse reminds me that I would probably puke if I ate it, and she's right, in fact just saying it out loud sounds gross.  It seems that I hit my calorie goal easily without any room for extras.  Guess I don't need extras.  (light bulb moment) On a positive note, I LOVE almonds.  They're my new junk food.  This week I found honey roasted and I'm so happy.

I'm desperate to weigh myself but I have been banned from the scale.  Grrrr... I almost cheated, but I honestly didn't want to rob Jesse of seeing the number with me.  lol, she has to put up with me 3 days a week, and I do whatever she tells me to.  I'm her little fat ball of clay she's molding into a super hero.  My success is her success, so we'll wait until next week.

The hardest thing this month has been realizing that my head is months ahead of my body.  My brain has made major changes and in my mind I'm much thinner, fitter, stronger than I am.  I have to be patient and know that this is a year process.  A year.  It seems like a long time from this point, but I know in 10 months I'll look back and wonder what took me so long to start the journey.

Week 8
I worked really hard this week.  Feeling sore all week long.  I get to weigh myself finally and I'm down 4 pounds this month, 10 pounds total.  I was pretty discouraged again until I saw this photo.  It's pretty powerful and I know I'm gaining tons of muscle.  Plus, my husband is seeing major changes in me and tells me all the time.  ;-)





~ Jesse-isms ~
Those of you that have been following my facebook just love my trainer and all the funny things she says to me.  Here are the "Jesse-isms" from the first two months.

* "That's not sweat, it's your fat crying."

* "It took you this long to get this fat, it's going to take a while to see results."

* "You're such a faker!  You're only cheating yourself."

* "'Farm Strong' doesn't look good at the beach, does it?" (referring to someone who told her he was 'farm strong.')

* "Go till failure."

* "You okay down there?  You having fat girl problems?"

* "Two more." (This isn't funny or anything, but I hear it all the time, and it usually doesn't mean 2 more.)

* "I'm sorry that a lifetime of fat can't be remedied in two months."

* "That's sad,... keep going." (her response to any complaint)

Lessons Learned Month 2

* Have someone to be accountable to.  This is a big deal.  Jesse asks me what I'm eating, if I've eaten enough. I don't want to think about having to admit to her that I ate a bag of chips and dip.  I don't want to know what she would make me do, lol.  If I make an appointment with her or with my work out buddy I would never think about canceling.  This has been huge in getting me to the gym every day.

* I used eat too much ranch.  I do not need a 1/4 cup of ranch on my salad.  No one does, yet this is the size the restaurants give you, sometimes more, and I used to SCRAPE every last drop out of that little sucker.  Ugh, that makes me want to vomit thinking about it.  Now I do the whole dip your fork a little bit in the ranch and then take a bite of salad.  It's delicious!!  Next month I hope to do away with the ranch totally and switch to a nice olive oil or something.  But to go from 1/4 of a cup to a tsp. is a major improvement.

* Eat clean, read everything.  If it says FAT FREE, LITE, or LOW IN CALORIES it probably isn't
that good for you.  I mean, do you see the veggies bragging about how good they are for you?  No, you just know.  The only things I eat that are packaged are oatmeal, granola bars, nuts, yogurt and soup.  Oh my gosh, I just realized that.  This is amazing.  The foods marketed towards fat people really makes me mad.  We are lied to!  Lied to!!!  The only safe foods to eat are from a farm.  Meaning they come from the ground or are raised on what comes from the ground.  Shop the perimeter of the store. Just the fruits, veggies, dairy and meat section.  That's it.  (Even though the bakery is in the perimeter, it doesn't count, keep walking.)

* You Can't Spot Reduce Fat.  You can't choose where you put fat on, you can't choose where you take fat off.  You just have to work your entire body.  Crunches aren't going to give you a flat stomach.  Just abs under your fat.  Abs are made in the kitchen.

* It doesn't get easier.  Ever, ever.  This was hard at first to accept.  The reality is, the ultra fit people in the gym are working just as hard as me, probably harder, why wouldn't they be?  Why would you ever want to go work out and not sweat or feel it the next day?  What a waste of time.  I've had to accept that as I get fitter, the workouts will get harder.  It will always be hard, I will always be sore, I will always sweat, and I am okay with this.

My Full Body and Mind Makeover...An Experiment

June 17, 2014
I have decided that it's now or never.  Who cares if it's the middle of wedding season, who cares if I have two events this week, who cares?  I will join the gym no matter what.  I pull into the Planet Fitness parking lot and enter this unknown facility in heels.  It will be the last time I wear heels, or even look cute at the gym.  I sign my life away and commit to a year, I figure you have to give anything a year to see real results.  I walk out thinking, that was painless.  This will also be the last time I think that.

June 18, 2014
I sit in my car and stare at the building.  I feel like I'm on a blind date my mom set me up on.  A blind date with someone I know I should like, total marriage material, but someone I know I will hate and just isn't my type.  I drag myself in with my head down.  My trainer, Jesse, is waiting for me.  She has me fill out every embarrassing fact about myself; age, weight, current amount of exercise.  She knows more about me than my mom!  Now there was nothing left to do, it was time to exercise.  Ugh!

My First Workout
My first workout...sucked.  It honestly wasn't anything too difficult, but for someone overweight and extremely out of shape, it was brutal.  I started with 30 minutes on the treadmill as a warm up.  (Can I mention that I would have considered THAT the workout.)  After the treadmill I worked out with Jesse for an hour.  90 minute workout, longer than I had ever worked out in my adult life.  I limped to my car promising Jesse that I would indeed be back the next day.  When I got home, I could hardly walk in the house.  That night it was so uncomfortable to sleep.  Simply laying on my body hurt every single inch of it.  I had a terrible night sleep and dragged my sore, exhausted body back to the gym the next day.

Week Two
My events have slowed down allowing me with enough time to do some workout clothes shopping.  I feel so much better actually having workout clothes and looking like I belong at the gym.  I even had that weird "workout high" leaving the gym.  What is happening to me?

Week Three
I am springing out of bed with new found energy!  Screw that 30 minutes on the treadmill, I'm up to 30 minutes on the elliptical!  I still hate working out, but I've gone 6 days a week since I joined.  If anything, I am committed!  I bounce into the gym with my head held high ready to take on whatever evil Jesse throws my way!  A major difference in just three weeks.

Week Four
I am starting to get discouraged.  Yes, I am seeing major strength results, but I don't feel like I am losing weight.  I am starting to feel like I will be fat forever.  Jesse bans me from the scale.

July 18, 2014 - One Month Gym-iversary
I get to weigh myself and I'm down 6 lbs.  I'm not too excited, but Jesse reminds me that I am doing this correctly, not with some fad diet or exercise.  I do some math and figure out that if I can keep that weight loss rate up, that will be 72 lbs in a year, that's totally legit! (Jesse also reminded me that it took me this long to get this fat, it's going to take time to get rid of it.  She is brutally honest, and just the kick in the ass I need.)

Lessons Learned Month One
(Many of you may know these, but I had to learn them all.)

*A body in motion stays in motion.  Now that I have gone to the gym every day for a month, I can't imagine missing a day.  Even the one day off a week that I take to rest I'm thinking about the gym.

*Food is fuel.  Nothing else.  When you work your body out enough, ANYTHING will sound delicious.  A bowl of lettuce and chicken with lemon squeezed on it, YUM!!  I've been off of fast food for the past month and when I cheated and ate an In N Out Protein Style Dbl Dbl, my body revolted and I became extremely sick.  My body isn't used to that crap any more.

*Skinny is not fit.  I have learned that those skinny girls, are just skinny, weak girls.  I used to just want to lose weight, now I want to be fit, to be strong!

*People at the gym are not mean.  I used to be one of those fat people totally afraid of the gym and the fit people there.  Guess what, they don't care about what you're doing.  They don't look at you twice and in fact if they do notice you, it might be to give encouragement!  The only mean person I've met is my trainer, and I've asked her to be mean to me.  ;-)

*People lie to fat people.  You know how many of my friends have told me I'm not fat?  They're trying to be nice and I think they mean that I "look" fabulous.  We all know I can work it!  But the reality is that I'm dying in this body.  Slowly.  I don't "feel" fabulous.  As I get older it will just be harder to lose the weight.  The nicest thing anyone has ever done for me, is to tell me I'm fat, weak, and that I don't have to be!  So thank you Jesse, for being that one person and that one person I can trust to get me to the other side.  I'll see you there.

New Tips For Disneyland

We have come SO far since November.  This was our third trip in three months, and we get better every time.  This trip I was able to find a Disney shirt ahead of time at Wal-Mart for $7.50!  I was stoked.  You can't really see it because of my awesome lanyard, but it's Ariel and it says:  "Go on and kiss the girl!"  My friend and fellow APH, Yasmin, told me that the Wal-Mart off the exit past Disneyland has THE BEST clothing selection.  I'm going to try and hit it up next time.  Clothes in the park are very expensive.  Honestly, I didn't see a cuter shirt there for sale than mine.  ;-)

(And yes, Jason has many sets of ears, but they are all beanies and are very warm.  So they only come out at night.)  ;-)

I mentioned this in my first post, but this time we really got to prove it.  Even though it was a Monday and Tuesday, the line for The Matterhorn wrapped halfway around the mountain all day.  We waited each night until 7:00ish when people were lining up for the parade and managed to get in 3 or 4 runs in an hour!  It's awesome, you also get a fairly good view of the parade while you're in line for 5 minutes.

FastPass:
I learned a bit more about how to utilize the FastPass.  At the bottom of the pass it will tell you when you can get another one.  We got in the habit of getting another FastPass before using the first one, so that the clock starts ticking on the second one at once.

Water:
I keep trying to pack as lite as possible.  Water is the heaviest thing we carry.  Not again, Mom is not a pack mule.  And even though my husband shares the brunt of the bag carrying, I end up with it most of the day.  We are each going to carry our own water bottle and refill them in the park for free from the restaurants.  I found these cute ones on sale right now at the Disney Store for $7.00.  These are perfect because they have the shoulder strap. They also have a Minnie, Grumpy and Tink.  Guess which one of us will get Grumpy?

Slow Days:
We also learned that even though Monday is slow, Tuesday and Wednesday are even slower.  Those are our goal days from now on.

Photo Discs:
This might be the best thing I learned.  First, I misquoted the price for the PhotoPass CD in my first post, and I have corrected it.   It is only $69.95 and you get 30 days to view your photos, you can also add on another 15 days for $20.  Here is the cool part.  The cost is the same no matter the number of photos.  For APHs that visit a lot, this can really add up.  I plan to add on the extension to this group of photos from January, and then after our February trip order the disc with photos from BOTH trips!

Family Restroom Locations:
This is the essential tip for parents traveling alone with opposite sex children.  I will be taking my son alone in February and I have been worried about what to do in regards to restroom breaks.  I don't feel comfortable separating and having him go in the men's alone, and he's at that age where he does not want to go into the women's.  Not to mention, I have no idea what the dads alone with daughters do.  At least Gabriel isn't going to see anything in a women's restroom.  I contacted Disney, which is very easy via their web site, and they responded within 3 days with a list of locations of "Family/Companion Restrooms" at both parks.  I made sure to scope out a few on this trip, so that I would know where they were for next time.

  • Main Street, USA:  First Aid
  • Frontierland:  Rancho del Zocalo Restaurante
  • Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer Island
  • Adventureland:  Aladdin's Oasis 
California Adventure:
  • Golden State: First Aid Facility
  • Golden State located across from The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Undersea Adventure
  • A Bug's Land - Flik's Fun Fair
  • Cars Land - Flo's V8 Cafe 
Pick Up A Newspaper On Buena Vista Street In California Adventure: 
While on Buena Vista Street, make sure to pick up a free copy of the Buena Vista Bugle.  I can't believe I've been to California Adventure this many times and have JUST heard about this.  So I have actually not looked for these papers myself, but this awesome web site says they were there in 2012, so I would assume the information is current.  You can also stop by the Chamber of Commerce and have the paper stamped with any date you like.  Might be fun for an engagement, wedding, birthday, or anniversary.


Jungle Cruise Map:
After your trip down the waters of The Jungle Cruise, ask the Cast Member for a free map of the attraction.  They should have them to hand out.  I haven't done this either, and it's on my list!  ;-)

More Free Food In Downtown Disney!:
In my first post I told you how you could get a free dinner for your birthday at Tortilla Joe's.  Well here is your free lunch!  Sign up for The Earl of Sandwich E Club and you will receive a free brownie for signing up and a free sandwich for your birthday!  Between the two restaurants, you're covered on your special day.  ;-)

January Disneyland Trip

We are fresh back from our first trip of 2014 to Disneyland.  We became first time annual pass holders at the end of November 2013.  Our goal is to go at least one day a month in 2014 except for July when we are blocked out the entire month and August when it's just way to crowded and hot to go.  This trip was our 4th and 5th day with our annual pass.  It's well already paid for itself. 

This month we were celebrating my husband's birthday, so of course we made sure to stop by a store and get a "Birthday" button for him and a "I'm Celebrating" button for Gabriel and I.  Those of you that know my husband will know how thrilled he was to have everyone talk to him all day.  ;-)  (Is there a sarcastic font?)  I always make sure to label the buttons on the back after our trip with the date and celebration.

I checked off one of the Disney snacks I had been wanting to try, Bacon Wrapped Asparagus at Bengal Barbecue in Adventureland.  Jason had a beef skewer and together the cost was around $7.00.  A delicious, filling snack for a good price.  For dinner one night we ate at my favorite restaurant, The Plaza Inn.  We first picked up a corn dog and apples slices for Gabriel outside at The Little Red Wagon.  We took that inside and Jason and I each had pot roast.  It was so good, and we love the atmosphere of the restaurant.  We like to take a good long rest there to get Gabriel re-energized. 

We also hit Tom Sawyer's Island.  I had never been and Jason really wanted to take Gabriel out there.  It's really cool and has lots of places to explore and climb.  We all enjoyed it.  I wish you could watch the fire works from the island!

Disneyland Bucket List Item!!
This trip we checked off a bucket list item, which was getting Gabriel selected as The Rebel Spy on Star Tours.  Those of you who have ridden the ride know that at the beginning they show a guest as The Rebel Spy and put their picture up on the screen.  It's totally cool.  It's random as far as I can tell.  We were in the last row when Gabriel was chosen, but I was there once and a women in the front row was The Rebel Spy.  

Tips for getting chosen as The Rebel Spy:
  • Get in your seat and buckled quickly.
  • Don't put your glasses on until instructed.
  • Look straight ahead.  They will be taking a picture of you to use, guests they can see clearly have a better chance.
Last time we were at Disneyland we saw a pin that said "I'm The Rebel Spy."  I thought that would be so cool to buy to commemorate the occasion.  Well of course, wouldn't you know it, it was NO
WHERE to be found this trip.  I mean I had the nicest lady at California Adventure check with every store in both parks and nothing.  BUT, I did get this little bit of magic.  Has anyone ever seen one of these?  I haven't.  It entitles the bearer to priority entrance to an attraction, a soda or water, popcorn, ice cream, small plush or other.  As you can see, Elena at CA AD filled in Rebel Spy Pin.  So if I can find it in the next month, it will be free!  How cool is that?  Y'all know I love a coupon.  ;-)

Why I Coupon

I believe some people are confused by why myself and people in general coupon.  So I wanted to shed light on the subject. 

First of all, "coupon" is a verb to those of us in the Couponing World.  So is "couponing."  I tell my husband all the time: "I need to coupon," or "I'm going couponing!"  I just wanted to clear that up.

Second, it seems like people think I coupon because of lack of money.  While I'm sure we could all use more money, this was not my motivation.  My family lives a normal existence, my kid takes music lessons and I have a year old car.  Nothing fancy happening over here, but we're fine.  No, my motivation came from keeping my hard earned money.  Why spend it if I didn't need to?

What I have found is that if I put a little effort into my shopping, I can get ANYTHING from a drug store for close to $1.00, or better yet, FREE or sometimes I even get paid to take it from the store.  You read correctly.  We used to go to Wal-Mart or Target at LEAST once a month and spend $100 on all of the toiletries everyone uses.  Soap, shampoo, conditioner, razors, make-up, 
vitamins, medicines, etc...  Never again!  Now I shop with the knowledge that I control what I will pay for the item.  Not the store and certainly not the manufacturer.  My biggest recent score was a 4 year supply of Tide laundry detergent for $30.00.  It worked out to .03 cents per load or $7.50 a year.  Can't top that!

Don't think I don't do this at the grocery store!  I usually aim for a 50% savings at the grocery store.  Which in California is very good.  Don't be fooled by what you see on TV.

Couponing is also a high.  I'm serious.  I am a hunter and free dish soap is my prey!  Don't get in my way, or worse, behind me in line when I'm out on a hunt.  Believe me, I mean business.  It's not unusual for me to get the shakes during or especially after a good hunt.  I may have a small issue.

I hear all the time, "But are you really going to use all of that?"  YES!!!  I hardly couponed at all in 2013.  My family didn't need to shop for any of the necessities, I had them in my stockpile.  Only when I got down to 4 bottles of laundry detergent did I start to panic.

Now I'm back at it and can't wait to build up my stockpile again.  Anyone can do this, but it does take work and know how.  I easily spent 20 - 30 hours researching and learning at first.  Now I spend a few hours a week on couponing, but the savings works out to an amazing hourly wage.  I encourage everyone, especially stay at home moms to try this.  It's like adding an income to your household.

LEGOLAND Part 3 ~ The Park

This is part three of a three part blog series on our family trip to LEGOLAND.  Make sure you read Part 1 ~ Tips/Reviews and Part 2 ~ The LEGOLAND Hotel of this blog series!

CHECK THE HOURS:
LEGOLAND is not open 7 days a week.  Make sure to check the days of operation before planning your trip.

WORK A CIRCLE:
You can easily go in a circle around the park to make sure you don't miss anything.  When you walk in, go right or left and just keep going.  To the right is the Star Wars display.  ;-)  To the left are most of the rides.

PREPARE THE KIDS:
LEGOLAND is a lot of walking around and taking your time to look at the cool LEGO models and displays.  They are everywhere and are so impressive.  It's not about thrill rides at LEGOLAND, although the little kids will LOVE the rides and not be afraid on 90% of them.

BUILD YOUR OWN MINI FIGURES:
Make sure you stop by and build your own mini figures.  This store was right inside the park on your left.  Mini figures are a key part to any LEGO collection.  The ability to create and package your own is pretty cool.  This store was really the only place we found to purchase anything cool.

RIDE PHOTOS/PARK PHOTOS:
Similar to Disneyland's Attraction Plus Card, you can buy a flash drive at LEGOLAND that you can load all of your ride photos on to.  I can't remember the price, but as we didn't find anything else to buy, we went for this.  Also at the end of the day I was able to pick photos that their park photographers had taken and also load them onto the flash drive.  For an additional fee of course, but it was nice to go home with the photos and not to worry about having to download them like you have to at Disneyland.

OTHER PARKS:
LEGOLAND also offers a Water Park and an Aquarium.  We did not go to either.  The water park was closed as it was November, and we're not that far from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, so we decided to spend all of our time in LEGOLAND.  You have to buy park hopper tickets to get into the other parks, but I would say the combination of the three parks could take up a few days on a family vacation.  And it would be so nice and convenient to stay at The LEGOLAND Hotel.  I just read that there will be a new Chima themed water park opening Summer 2014.  Our family might have to make it back this summer for that!

WAITING IN LINE:
The coolest thing that LEGOLAND has done, is to create play areas in the middle of the lines.  One parent with the children can go inside and play while the other holds their place in line.  It's genius. You could even just send your children in there.  The line loops around the play area so you can always see them.

LARGEST LEGO MODEL:
The largest LEGO model ever built is a Star Wars X-Wing at LEGOLAND.  I really never expected to see something this grand made out of LEGOS. My boys were so stoked as this combined their two loves of Star Wars and LEGOS.  The X-Wing is a 1:1 replica made of five million LEGO bricks that took a team of 32 Master Model Builders more than 17,000 hours to construct.  It was built in Russia and then shipped to the USA.  The model weighs more than 45,000 pounds, stands 11 feet tall and 43 feet long, with a wingspan of 44 feet. I believe this is only on display through January 2014.

Make sure to save plenty of time for MINILAND USA.  This is a huge area of different model cities from around the USA.

INTERACTION:
LEGOLAND is very interactive.  There are lots of places to take pictures and get "in" the models.  Careful as you walk down the street, a LEGO lady watering her LEGO plants might get some water on you.  A polar bear will jump out and roar and LEGO instruments will come to life to play music.  You can even sail LEGO boats around MINILAND Harbor.



WHAT WE MISSED:
There was an entire Star Wars MINILAND that we missed.  I know, I can't believe it!  We knew it was there, but well, this photo explains it all.  ;-)  We were just beat, and it was pretty cold and a little rainy the day we went.  So that will have to be for next time.

WHAT I'D LIKE TO SEE:
Better shopping!!  I swear, we were trying to spend money at LEGOLAND.  There just wasn't anything to spend it on.  I would love to see some sort of LEGO hat - LEGOLAND's answer to Disneyland's ears.  Maybe a yellow beanie with a LEGO face or something.  Or a hat in the shape of a LEGO head.  Give me some cool sweatshirts with mini figures or LEGOS on them.  A mini figure hanging off the zipper would be awesome!  A better selection of LEGO sets and sets that are exclusive to the park would be a nice incentive to get the LEGO enthusiast to visit.  Christmas Ornaments!  We visited in November and I would have loved to see some cool LEGO ornaments.  The only ones were mini figure sets in a plastic ornament ball.  Lame.

OVERALL REVIEW:
Overall, I would say my family had a great time at LEGOLAND.  The LEGOLAND Hotel was a huge part of our enjoyment.  Gabriel says he would like to go again this year, and I think we might try to add on a day to do that on one of our Disneyland trips.  A warm day so that we can take full advantage of the water parks.

LEGOLAND Part 2 ~ The LEGOLAND Hotel

This is part two in a three part series on our family trip to LEGOLAND.

On our recent trip to Disneyland, we decided to add a day at LEGOLAND and a night at The LEGOLAND Hotel.  I must say, The LEGOLAND Hotel was the highlight of our LEGOLAND trip.  It is so cool!  They should open up these LEGO Hotels everywhere families travel.

CHECK IN:
Over the front desk are thousands of mini figures.  A LEGO man on a bike rides back and forth and his wheels magnify the figures as he goes over them.  Really, really cool.  Upon check in Gabriel received a VIP Card and Lanyard with mini figures on it.  It was actually one of the coolest souvenirs!  We didn't even see them to buy in the park.  This hotel is all about the kids, and this is just one of the ways they make them feel special.

Don't worry if you get to the hotel and there is a line for check in.  Your kids will have plenty to do!  Here is Gabriel creating a LEGO masterpiece.  The kids can then put them on display and they have nightly building contests in the lobby.

GETTING TO YOUR ROOM:
After checking in, someone will help you to your room.  They will take a staff elevator with your luggage while your family heads to the guest elevator.  This has to be one of the coolest things in the hotel.  Check it out in Gabriel's video below!

YOUR ROOM:
LEGOLAND Hotel offers three different room designs.  Kingdom, Pirate and Adventure.  They then offer two different price levels of each room, regular and premium.  The main difference being how many LEGO and theme decorations are in your room.  I let Gabriel choose and he chose Pirate, which looked the coolest. (We did the regular priced pirate room.)

Our room in mid November was $160 a night.  It had a queen bed for the parents and bunk beds with a trundle in a separate bedroom for the kids.  So our room would have slept 5.  There were two TVs with Video On Demand. This was so cool!  Usually at a hotel you have to look and look for something to watch on unfamiliar channels at odd times.  Not at The LEGOLAND Hotel.  When we were settled for bed, Gabriel quickly found a children's movie, I found a trashy reality show to watch and Jason passed out.  ;-)

THE TREASURE HUNT:
Each room has a prize locked in a treasure chest along with clues that take you on a treasure hunt throughout the hotel.  When we got to the hotel, it was after 10:00, so everyone with little kids was in bed.  We had the entire hotel to ourselves to roam around and explore.  We grabbed a pencil and headed out to do the treasure hunt.  Gabriel loved the freedom of being encouraged to run around the hotel looking for clues.  His full treasure hunt is below as part of his tour video of the hotel.

BREAKFAST:
Our room came with breakfast at Bricks Family Restaurant.  I will admit, Jason and I were not impressed with the prepared food, but there was a ton that they couldn't mess up.  Dry cereal, fruit, pastries, bagels, you will get full.  There are also two separate buffets for children and adults.  The child's is lower and offers more child friendly selections.  We waited until after the morning rush with the little kids was over.  The restaurant alone is fun to be in, LEGO creations are everywhere. You can see the full restaurant in Gabriel's video below.  There was a LEGOLAND photographer taking family pictures in front of this sign.  She was happy to also take a picture for us with my camera.

NIGHTLY ENTERTAINMENT:
There is a ton of stuff going on each night for kids.  Parents can relax in the bar while their kids go crazy.  We missed everything because we were at Disneyland that day, and got to the hotel around 10:00pm.  Make sure to check into the schedule of events, they looked really cool.

GABRIEL'S TOUR: 
My son is the most awesome tour guide.  He researched the hotel before we went, so he knew all of the things he wanted to look for.  (I wasn't planning on posting an official video when we were filming this, so there are actually a few places we left out, including the outside, the lobby, the pool and patio.)  Here is his exclusive tour of the hotel.  Enjoy! LEGO "MINI" FIGURES:
A perk of staying at The LEGOLAND Hotel is being able to meet and interact with LEGO "Mini" Figures.  For whatever reason, these figures do not roam the park, so if you want to meet them, you have to stay in the hotel.  They are also a part of the nightly entertainment.  I believe there are three different mini figures, representing the three different room types.

THE POOL:
Our visit was in November, so we did not use the pool, but there was a lovely pool and patio.  The patio of course has a ton of LEGO creations decorating it.

THE PARK:
LEGOLAND is literally steps from the hotel.  It was so awesome to walk out of the hotel and be at the park!  You are allowed to leave your car in the hotel parking lot.  After the day in LEGOLAND, it was awesome to have a place to go, grab some coffee, use the restroom away from the park crowds and get the car.  This is also when we met the Mini Figure Pirate.  We had gotten there too late the night before and missed him.  So that was cool!

WHAT WE MISSED:
We missed the pool, due to time of year, but it was beautiful.  The Skyline Lounge is a full bar with the LEGO theme continuing.  It was even still opened when we got there, but we were too busy checking in for me to go hang out.  It would be an awesome place to relax after getting the kids to sleep upstairs.  There is also Mini's Lounge.  They also serve food, mostly snacks I believe.  This lounge is facing the stage where the nightly entertainment takes place.  I have a feeling the parents hang out there and watch while the kids sit on the floor up front.

WHAT I'D LIKE TO SEE:
The soaps, shampoos and conditioners were standard like in any hotel.  I really wish that there had been some sort of cool mini figure mini shampoo bottles or something.  The soaps could even be in the shape of LEGOS.  This would have super made my day.  Not bad if my only complaint is about the lack of theme in their soap.  ;-)

LEGOLAND Part 1 ~ Tips/Review

This is part one of a three part series on LEGOLAND.  Our family LOVES Legos!  Seriously, we love them.  We have an entire room in our home filled with LEGO sets.  We have so many LEGOS, I have them listed on our insurance.  I. Am. Not. Kidding.

These blog posts will tell you the good, the bad and the ugly of traveling to LEGOLAND California.  Part 1 - Tips/Review, Part 2 - The Hotel, Part 3 - The Park.

Here are my tips and reviews of LEGOLAND Park.

CHECK THE HOURS:
LEGOLAND is not open 7 days a week.  Make sure to check the days of operation before planning your trip.

STAY AT THE LEGOLAND HOTEL:
It was the highlight of our trip and so awesome!  It was probably only $40 more than other hotels in the area, well worth it.  I really wanted to stay another day and just enjoy the hotel.  It is brand new built in 2012.  Check out part two of my post for all of the cool details of the hotel.  Including video starring my son as the tour guide.

DO NOT PAY FOR CHILDREN:
There are a TON of promotions and coupons for a free child entry with an adult ticket.  Going before June 30, 2014?  Here's your deal:  Go to this link and enter Promo Code 13035.  This coupon code is good for one free 'One Day Child Hopper' ticket with the purchase of a full price 'One Day Adult Hopper' ticket to LEGOLAND California.  One free child per adult ticket.  We have one child.  What I ended up doing was buying a full price park hopper for Jason, got Gabriel's free ticket, and then I bought for myself a LEGOLAND only ticket, as I knew we weren't going to the other parks.  Other places to find these coupons are by joining The LEGO Club, sometimes in the LEGO Club Magazine and Shutterfly.  Just keep your eyes peeled, I see promotions all the time for free child's admission.  Ask your friends or post online, they really are everywhere.

DON'T EXPECT GREAT SHOPPING:
We had just come from Disneyland where there is THE coolest LEGO store in Downtown Disney.  My husband wanted to shop there but I insisted he wait until we got to LEGOLAND, expecting to find the most awesome selection.  Well, here's some ugly for you.  The stores sucked, they really did.  There was nothing exclusive to the park, no hard to find sets, not even cool Christmas ornaments. (We went in November.)  The only cool thing was a build your own mini figure display where Gabriel got to create and even package his own mini figures.  (There is a cooler make your own mini figure display in Star Trader in Disneyland.)  The clothing was worse.  No cool LEGOLAND clothes with mini figures on them or anything.  The clothing selection reminded me of a sad California t-shirt stand in the mall. 

WHAT I GOT SCOLDED FOR:
Yeah, I'm a trouble maker, you all know that.  We had just come from three days at Disneyland where the answer is always "Yes!"  Well, LEGOLAND wasn't quite as friendly.  They have small "roller coasters."  Nothing too big or exciting by any means.  Yet they would make you remove hats on some rides, sunglasses on others, - never consistent, would yell at you in the microphone if you took your camera out on a ride, they made me feel like a bad child.  Don't even THINK about trying to take a picture of your ride photo with your phone.  That is a super no no.  Let's just say, Disneyland staff they are not.  They are like a step up from a mid state fair carnie.

DON'T EXPECT THRILL RIDES:
There are only a few roller coasters, and only children would consider them "roller coasters."  There was one that had a pretty good drop and Gabriel enjoyed all of the rides!  Many of the rides are to simply take you through LEGO displays.  It's all about the LEGOS.  LEGOLAND is for younger children and the LEGO enthusiast.  It is a nice, calm, uncrowded, small park.  We took Gabriel when he was 10 and he loved it.  I don't know if he will at 11 and probably for sure not at 12.  It's great for 10 and under!  It was also the perfect way to end our vacation.  It was more like going to your local zoo than a theme park.  At least when we went in November.  After the crowds and craziness of Disneyland, it was nice to just walk around and enjoy the scenery.  *Update, Gabriel was just polled and said he can't wait to go back to LEGOLAND.  ;-)

FOOD:
We did not try to bring too much food into LEGOLAND, as I couldn't find people online that had done the same.  Might not be a good idea, or just be ready to take it back to the car if they deny you.  They are much more sticklers than good ol' Disneyland.  We did bring water bottles.  The food in the park is lacking, very.  Not exciting at all. Although everyone was talking/raving about the Granny Apple Fries.  I guess they're deep fried apples you dip in a vanilla sauce.  Worth checking out.

STAFF:
Like I said above, they're a step up from a carnie.  We did stumble upon some staff that had great LEGO facts about the park and were very friendly.  But on the whole, I was not impressed.  Especially on one ride where the two ride operators kept asking each other safety questions on how to properly load people.  Seriously. They all just seemed tired, depressed and not happy to be at work.  They also staff rides alone.  You would never see a lone Cast Member operating a ride at Disneyland.  By our last ride of the day at LEGOLAND, it was very cold.  We walked up to no one in line and a lone, freezing ride operator.  The whole thing just seemed sad.  No one in line, doesn't have a warm uniform, no coworker around.  Even a little weird.

CLEANLINESS OF THE PARK:
LEGOLAND is, well... dirty.  There is dust and cobwebs on all of the rides and LEGO models & displays.  Even the gardening seems a little unkempt.  Dead leaves scattered everywhere on walkways and LEGO displays, sad flowers gardens.  Paint on all of the line handrails is chipping, faded LEGOS in the displays.  It just wasn't that well cared for.  Which is a shame, because it could be really awesome.

SUMMER:
LEGOLAND has an entire wet ride and play area that was closed when we went in November.  Summer/warm months are clearly the months to visit this park.  The Water Park will also be open during those months, although it does require a park hopper ticket.  I also just learned that they will be opening a Chima themed water park this summer. 

LEGO VIP:
Before you go or make your first purchase at a LEGO store, become a LEGO VIP.  You can earn points for every dollar spent online or at a LEGO store and earn coupons.  I assume you can earn points at the stores in LEGOLAND, although I wouldn't count on it.  It's a good program to join regardless, if you buy a lot of LEGOS.

Sarah’s Disneyland Tips


I did a TON of research before our last two trips to Disneyland and especially since we have become Annual Pass Holders.  Here is some information I have gathered along with tips I have learned. 

Sunscreen:
The absolute first tip is to wear sunscreen and reapply.  Seriously.

Ask A Cast Member:
The absolute second tip, is to ask any Cast Member, anything, any time.  Disneyland has the most impeccable customer service and staff training there is.  If you need anything, anything at all, ask someone.  They are not allowed to say "I don't know."  (Or point.  They're not allowed to point with one finger, always an open palm or two fingers.)  ;-)  Cast Members are also great sources of Disney facts and history.

Medicine & Gum:
There are some minor meds available in the park, but they are hard to find.  Pack a few of everything.  Gum is not sold in the parks for cleanliness.  Bring your own if you're a gum chewer.

Arrive Early:
It really is way less crowded if you get there before the park opens.  Allow at least 30-45 minutes to park, catch the tram, and get to the gate. 

Lockers:
Get a locker.  In the past, you’ve had to pay each time you open your locker.  That is simply not the case.  You rent it by size and create a pin code to open your locker.  We like to put a change of clothes in it for later based on the season, water, and a change of shoes.  You don't need to lug all of that around.  We usually only visit the locker once, maybe twice.  Usually just to change clothes or shoes.  Your feet will LOVE your Uggs when they are cold and sore. And if your shoes get wet in the summer time, a pair of flip-flops will save you.

Buttons:
Pick up a free I'm Celebrating pin from City Hall on Main Street in Disneyland or Guest Services at Disney's California Adventure. Just for the asking you can receive a Happy Birthday, Happy Anniversary, Just Married, Family Reunion, Happily Ever After or First Visit Button.  We get pins every time and I write with a sharpie the date and celebration on the back.  Buy lanyards and wear them on your lanyards.  Keep asking.  Each store and restaurant has pins.  When Jason and I went on our anniversary Guest Services had the "Happily Ever After Pins" but we didn't find the "Happy Anniversary" pins until lunch at a restaurant.  So keep asking until you find the ones you want.

Birthday:
Birthday guests can get a phone call from Goofy at City Hall.  After you enter the park, go to the first building on the left.  Don’t forget your free birthday pin!

Look The Part/Buy Ears First: 
You'll feel the Disney magic more if you look the part.  Plus your photos will be cuter.  The Mad Hatter is right when you walk in on the right.  If you have a specific hat in mind, ask around.  The stores are not the same.  My boys love Star Wars, so Star Trader is our favorite store, near Space Mountain.  Disneyland is one of the only places where you can dress kind of crazy and no one cares.  If fact they love it.  EVERYONE wears ears AND a lanyard with pins at Disneyland.

Pick up a photo card from a photographer and they will take pictures all day.  They simply scan it after they’ve taken the pictures.  The PhotoPass photographers in the parks will take pictures with their cameras at no charge, but it will cost you big to actually buy the photos. Bypass this charge by asking the PhotoPass photographers to use your camera or phone to take your picture. They’re happy to do it and most of them are pretty good at composing a shot as they do it all day long.  You'll have to pose while they take photos with both cameras, but it's worth it.  They all wear the same uniform and can be found at photo opp places in both parks.  Take your time with these photos, don't be in a hurry, and put your bags down.  The photos look horrible with all your gear in them.  I usually make my boys take a few of these family shots right when we get there.  I want to get it done, while we all still look cute.  ;-)  My favorite posed family spots are in front of the train station right when you walk in, and on Main Street where the Christmas tree is placed.  A tip:  You can buy a photo disc of all of the photos the PhotoPass photographers take.  They are a great price at $69.95 regardless of the number of pictures.  I’ve heard that if you plan to buy these discs, tell the photographers.  They will take more time and more pictures with you.

Ride Photos:
These are always my favorite, and a favorite of my friends on facebook to poke fun at me about.  A new feature at Disneyland, you can buy an Attractions Plus Photo Card.  I believe they are $50.  You can load unlimited ride photos from either park for two weeks onto these cards.  Totally worth it if you will be there for multiple days.  OR, be ready with that camera or phone after the rides where photos are taken and snap a picture of the screen.  Disneyland does not stop you from doing this, and if you’re ready you can get a pretty good shot for free. (They’re only up for a minute or two, so be ready.) Taking a picture of the screen is handy no matter what as when you go to buy your photo they will ask for the number off the screen.

Camera:
Leave your SLR at home.  You'll want to take great pictures I know, but that thing will feel like 20 lbs at the end of the day.  And you'll worry about it because it's expensive.  Take a smaller camera.  You'll also use it more if it's already in your hand.  Don't forget that video!!

Pictures at the Castle:
Everyone will be crowded around the front of the castle trying to get pictures.  As you face the castle, go to the right (East).  There is a path leading to Snow White’s wishing well where you can get awesome photos of the family with the castle behind you.  And no one will be in your way.  Shhhh… can you hear Snow White singing?

Character Autographs:
Bring a blank book and large sharpie for autographs.  When I was a child, the characters roamed the park and kids would freely run up to them as their parents fought for a picture.  This is not how it is today. There are set places where you meet the characters and you wait in line etc. This is nice because you get that good photo of just your family.  Take the time to at least meet Mickey in Mickey's House in Toontown.  Every character will autograph anything for you.  Yes, you can buy one of Disney's autograph books, but they can be pricy.  Create a unique memento of your trip by having them sign a t-shirt or canvas tote bag.

*Only children under 8 or 10 are allowed in the park in costume.

Rides:
Know what rides your child can and cannot go on.  Here are the ride requirements.

FastPass:
Learn about FastPass and USE IT!!  It is the smart thing to do to plan your day a bit, find the rides and attractions that offer FastPass and use them.  You can only get one at a time, or the time that you can get another one will appear on the bottom of your FastPass.  Click here for more info.  
It can feel tricky and confusing at first, but by your second day you'll totally be mapping out your day with FastPasses. *A little trick.  You can have one FastPass at each park.  So we'll get one for Radiator Springs, go over to Disneyland for awhile, and go back to California Adventure when the time frame opens up.  I'm telling you, learn to work the FastPass system!


Rider Swap:
Rider Swap is a great way for parents with young children that want to get in a few thrill rides.  Simply ask a Cask Member at the beginning of the line for a Rider Swap Pass.  (We've never done this, so I'm unsure where you get the pass, before the ride or after.) After one parent and an older child ride the rider "swaps" with the other parent and one other person and they get to skip the line.  It really works well.  The older child can even ride both times with both parents.  Win!

Popular Rides:
Peter Pan, Mr. Toad's, Pirates of the Caribbean are ALWAYS popular.  Try to do those first, or early in the am.  Do Space Mountain or The Matterhorn during a parade or fireworks.  The lines tend to be shorter then.  Do kiddy rides at night when the families with little ones have gone back to the hotels.

Wet Rides:
Always plan on doing these rides early on a hot day so you can dry off.  Do them multiple times in a row, get the wet part of the day out of the way.  Buy some cheap ponchos at the dollar store and then toss them afterwards.  Use a freezer Ziploc to put your camera and wallet in for the ride.  Bring a pair of flip-flops and change into them just for the wet rides.  I can’t walk all day in flip-flops.  But walking around in wet tennis shoes is horrible.  Take your shoes off, another use for those freezer bags, slip your flip-flops on for the ride, and you’re good to go afterwards!

Balloons:
If you break a balloon or even just find a broken balloon on the ground, take it to any balloon vendor for a free replacement.  I dare you to find anything on the ground at Disneyland.  Trash is picked up before it hits the ground it seems.

Journals For Kids:
These are awesome!  I’m buying a few for Gabriel for this year! This is more like a scrapbook, and this one looks more like a journal.

Free Beads at New Orleans Square:
Head on over to New Orleans Square when the bands are playing, the beads are usually thrown out by cast members and are a fun treat.

If you have a child that is remotely into Star Wars, then you must try to get them into the Jedi Training Academy.  A live show with over 20 kids selected, these padawans learn the ways of the Jedi with training light sabers.  They even fight Darth Vader.  So cool!  Tips for getting your child selected: Wear a Star Wars shirt; have them jump up and down.  Wave a sign that says: “It’s My Birthday.”  Go multiple times.  My goal for this year is to get Gabriel on stage for this.

Flattened Pennies:
Bring quarters and pennies for the flattened coin machines.  These make great, cheap keepsakes.  They also sell books to keep them in.  "MouseWait" app for iPhone has a full list of all the machines in the parks.  I'd like to get one from every machine at some point this year.  I also saw that there are some special flattened quarter machines.  Must do a few of those!

Glow Sticks:
Bring a cheap tube of glow sticks. Trust me you will thank me for this one! When it gets dark Disneyland has tons of light up toys that can really add up.  The Dollar Store usually has a great selection of glow items.

Souvenirs:
Buy Disney items ahead of time at Wal-Mart or on line.  Surprise your kids at the hotel.  Disney Store online is having a great sale right now.  Don't buy clothes at Disneyland, you can find Disney licensed apparel lots of places.  Be prepared for cold weather at night, they turn up the AC by their sweaters to boost sales.  I swear, it's a fact.

Souvenirs For Kids:
I've heard of this tip, which sounds especially good if you have multiple children.  Set a souvenir limit for each child and load onto Disney Gift Cards.  That way they can keep track of what they spend, and you'll have to deal with less cash and keeping track of who spent how much.

Food:
Bring food, bring food, bring food.  We bring granola bars, beef jerky, goldfish, pretzels, pop chips, grapes, apples, Go Go Applesauce, anything easy to pack and carry.  Heck, make some PB & Js. You will get hungry, and if you have to stop to buy food every time, this will cost time and money.  Waiting in line is a great place to get a snack in, what else are you going to do? 

We usually only try to do one meal in the park.  Our favorite restaurant is The Plaza Inn.  
You can get a pot roast or fried chicken meal with mashed potatoes and green beans for around $16.00.  My son and I split one.  We like it because it's real food, not gross heavy park food.  This is also a great place to watch the fireworks if you time it correctly.

All menus and restaurant descriptions are posted online.  You can make reservations, which is always a good idea at the more popular restaurants, Ariel’s Grotto (California Adventure) and The Blue Bayou.  Have a food game plan.  Figure out which meal(s) you want to buy in the park and plan to eat there at non-peak times.  We eat breakfast at the hotel, pack snacks, and buy a meal inside.

I've been told that we have to get a Pineapple Whip from outside The Tiki Room.  We haven't done that yet, it's on our list.

Water:
Bring water, bring water, bring water.  In the past, we have brought multiple bottles of water, carried some, and put some in a locker.  In the future I think that we will each carry our own re useable bottle and fill up at restaurants.  Any restaurant will give you free ice water OR hot water.  Bring a hot/cold water bottle and some instant coffee, tea bags or hot coco for cold weather!

Ziplocs:
Your best friend at Disneyland.  I put my camera & phone in one on wet rides, band-aids, snacks, souvenirs, anything.  Can’t have too many Ziplocs.  I usually have a few freezer and sandwich-sized bags on me.

Disney Trading Pins:
If you go for the pin craze, which I did, be careful with your special pins.  I bought one commemorating our anniversary, very special, and then my son's pin fell off his lanyard.  We found it, and then I learned they sell "locking pin backs."  I immediately got some for our special pins.  Other than that, we bought a bunch of pins on eBay for about a $1 a pin.  Now we just spend money on one pin there to commemorate that trip.  You can trade pins with other guests and certain cast members.  In fact the cast members have to trade with you.  Here is some Pin Trading Etiquette.

Strollers:
I've never taken a small child to Disneyland, but I would think this is a must.  Either bring yours or rent one, although they are first come first serve, same with wheelchairs and scooters.  Everyone leaves their strollers with food, blankets, baby bags, etc… in "stroller parking," no one touches them.  I wouldn't leave your camera or valuables there of course.  A great place for your child to rest and sleep when they need to, not to mention, a great way to lug all of your stuff around.

History:
Disneyland is filled with history.  Research it a bit and as you walk around you'll appreciate it more.  Mr. Disney truly loved education and history, which is evident throughout the park.

Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln:
Don't pass this up, it's too good.  We try to do it every time.  A great attraction to save for when everyone needs a rest inside from the heat or cold.

Hidden Mickeys:
Hidden Mickeys are everywhere.  Searching for them can be a fun waiting in line game for kids.  For a list, this book seems to be the best.  Speaking of things to do in line, check this book out.

Sunglasses:
You have a high chance of losing these on a ride.  Do what I did and leave the expensive Diors at home.  I found a cute pair for $5 at Target.  Perfect for Disneyland, and I didn't care if anything happened to them.

Tired Kids and Feet:  
Plan some things to do when the kids are tired or you need a rest.  Fireworks and parades are obvious choices, but both parks offer a variety of small shows throughout the day.   They will hand you a list of performances as you enter the park.  Other things to do when you need a rest, Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, Captain Eo, the Monorail and the Disneyland Railroad.  The railroad is a great place to take a 30 minute rest and take in the sites, you also get a little bit of history of the park as you travel around.  If you're trying to make it all day/night, make sure to let them rest when they want or they'll never make it.  Gabriel is usually DONE by the end of the night.

Utilize Your Smart Phone:
Some apps for my iPhone that I found and love are:
*MouseWait - Gives you wait times on rides and attractions, also a daily crowd index.  You'll get hooked like me and check the crowd even when you aren't there.  ;-) This app also has a "restaurants nearby" feature, lists of every flattened coin machine in the park, and much more very useful information.
*DL Maps - Map of Disneyland
*Story and Disney Memories HD- Apps to add Disney Magic to your photos and videos.
*Disneyland Mobile Magic - This is the newest app I have downloaded.  I haven't gotten a chance to use it, as special features unlock when you are in the park.  Reviews say this is THE app to have.

Buy A Portable Phone Charger:
You will love me for this if you're like me and use your phone to take pictures and videos.  I found an awesome rechargeable charger at Kohl's for $20.  We did go through our power during the day.  It was so nice to get in line and plug in my phone.

Warm Clothes:
Mittens are a great thing to have in cold weather.  I also saw families with blankets that they just wrapped around themselves.  These are great at parades and fireworks to claim your spot and make the cold ground a little nicer to sit on.

For the Disney Enthusiast:
Just ask a Cast Member to ride in the Wheel House of The Mark Twain Riverboat.  This is an awesome experience that is totally on my to do list.  You get to sign the guest book and even get a certificate commemorating the day. 

Another item on my to do list is to ride in the Presidential Railroad Car, "The Lilly Belle." 
If you’d like to ride the Lilly Belle on your next trip, here’s what you need to know.  I found this useful information here.
  1. Arrive at the park before it opens and proceed directly to the 2nd floor of the Disneyland Railroad Station.
  2. Wait outside, in line, until you hear the official park opening announcement.
  3. When the Railroad Cast Members arrive, ask who is taking the reservations for the Lilly Belle Car (if it is available).
  4. Arrive early for your scheduled departure time.
You should also remember the following…
  1. The Lilly Belle does not operate everyday, nor is it available all day long. Only a few trips are available each day.
  2. Guests must reserve their ride with a Disneyland Cast Member and must also be escorted in the car with a Cast Member (Club 33 members can ride at anytime, unescorted).
  3. Rides are round-trip from the Main Street Train Station.
  4. The escorting Cast Member will share the history of the car while you travel.
Shopping:
Stores on Main Street and in Downtown Disney sometimes have different/later hours than the park.  Save your shopping for later, although the stores do tend to be crowded at this time.  I like to shop as I go as each store in each land is different. We do usually save Downtown Disney for the end of the night, and take our time leaving.

Closing Hours:
Let's say the park closes at 11:00pm.  You can get in an hour long line at 10:55pm!  Make use of this, make sure you get there before they close the line, and it's like getting extra free time in the park.

California Adventure:
I don’t have nearly as many tips for California Adventure as I do for Disneyland.  I hope that changes by the end of the year.

Bug's Land:
Make sure to catch “It’s Tough To Be A Bug.”  It’s a 3D film and live show in Bug’s Land.  My son is 10 and he loved it, made me watch it twice.  It's fun, cute and interactive, another great place to rest tired feet.

Cars Land:
Free Buttons In Cars Land:
In Cars Land ask Cast Members for free buttons.  Some have them to hand out.  Some cast members will make a game with children by asking them Cars trivia to earn the buttons.

Radiator Springs Racers:
As we all know, it’s all about Radiator Springs Racers.  Period.  FastPasses for this ride often run out by 9:30am!  First thing in California Adventure is to get a FastPass for this ride.  Sometimes the line for the FastPass is 30 minutes!  Get the FastPass, and then if the wait isn’t long, wait in the regular line, and save those FastPasses for another run when it gets busier. When we went in mid November the wait was only 45 minutes, by far our longest wait of the trip.  I have heard during peak days the wait can be hours long.  I have also heard that is a totally difference experience at night.  That's on our to do list.

Alcohol at Cone 3 in Cozy Cone Motel:
California Adventure and Downtown Disney are the only places you can buy an alcoholic beverage at Disneyland Resort.  Cone 3 in Cars Land is my favorite where they sell Skyy Vodka and Lemonade for $8.  ;-)  You are allowed to walk around the park with these drinks, but the PhotoPass photographers will ask you to put them down before posing for a picture.  Funny, huh?

World of Color:
I thought this was really cool!  Disney has recently added interactive features where you can upload pictures of yourself ahead of time and they may be used during the show.  (Watch for features like this coming to multiple attractions in the coming years.)  You need to get a FastPass for this attraction.  This is the only attraction that you can get a FastPass for that DOES NOT prevent you from getting other FastPasses during the day for rides.  You may get a little wet if you're up close, and it's pretty much a standing area thing.  There are a few restaurants including Ariel's Grotto that have special viewing areas that come with a dinner.  I don't think these are that much better though, so maybe something to look into in person before you spend the money on the dinner & show package.

Downtown Disney:
FREE DINNER at Tortilla Joe's:
Join this restaurant club, and for your birthday they will send you a $30 gift certificate.  One of the restaurants that accepts this GC is Tortilla Joe's in Downtown Disney.  I think you have to be over 21 to register for this and the GC says that you must present your ID.  The GC is good for 60 days after your birthday.  We have already received Jason's $30 for his birthday this month!  I plan to use mine in April when we go for Gabriel's birthday.

For the LEGO Lover:
Stop by the LEGO store at Downtown Disney. You can stay as long as you like, playing with unique LEGO shapes and racing LEGO cars. This is THE MOST AWESOME LEGO STORE we have ever seen, and we've been to LEGOLAND.  Save your money for this store, there is an entire pick a brick wall.  Truly awesome.

Disabilites:
Do you or your child have a disability?  If so, check ahead of time with Disneyland for what you need to do for line passes.  The rules have recently changed.  This can be amazing if your child is autistic, in a wheelchair, or has any sort of disability.  Disney wants to make sure that every guest can enjoy their experience.  I know that skipping the crowds and the noise is the only way some children could have a magical experience.  Scooters and wheelchairs are rented strictly first come first serve.  Not based on true need.  I'd bring my own and not count on Disneyland having one for me to rent.
